Incident-mass dependence of temperature-enhanced ion-induced sputtering in liquid metals

چکیده
The sputtering yield of liquid tin due to heavy-ion bombardment has been found to have significantly reduced dependence on the sample temperature than that of light-ion bombardment. These results, combined with previous light-ion data, show that the mechanisms that increase the sputtering yield of materials under ion irradiation are diminished or surpassed by the effects of heavy-ion bombardment. Beams of 700eV Ne and 500–1000eV Ar ions irradiated highpurity tin at temperatures from 20–340 C at oblique incidence; a pair of quartz–crystal microbalances performed realtime measurement of the mass ejected from the surface. Monte Carlo atomistic simulations were also performed for comparison and to help interpret the experimental results. We discuss the results of this series of experiments and the lack of a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms behind temperature-dependent sputtering in light of these results. 2004 Elsevier B.V. Temperature dependence of liquid Sn sputtering by low - energy He + and D + bombardment
Absolute sputtering yields of liquid tin from 240 to 420 C due to irradiation by low-energy helium and deuterium have been measured. For ion energies ranging from 300 to 1000 eV, temperature enhancement of liquid tin sputtering was noted. These measurements were obtained by IIAX (the Ion-surface InterAction eXperiment) using a velocityfiltered ion beam at 45 incidence to sputter material from a...
متن کاملKinematic and thermodynamic effects on liquid lithium sputtering
The lithium-sputtering yield from lithium and tin-lithium surfaces in the liquid state under low-energy, singly charged particles as a function of target temperature is measured by using the IIAX (Ion-surface Interaction Experiment) facility. Total erosion exceeds that expected from conventional physical sputtering after accounting for lithium evaporation for temperatures between 200 and 400 oC...

متن کاملEnergy dependence of quantum dot formation by ion sputtering
Ordered quantum dot patterns are generated on GaSb and InSb surfaces due to a surface instability induced by Ar-ion sputtering at normal incidence. The characteristic length of the generated patterns scales with the square root of the ion energy over the energy range of 75–1800 eV. This energy dependence is compared to the solutions of the isotropic Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation and allows the ...
متن کاملTemperature dependence of liquid-lithium sputtering from oblique 700 eV He ions
The lithium-sputtering yield of liquid lithium as a function of sample temperature has been measured in the ionsurface interaction experiment (IIAX). Lithium sputtering is measured for Dþ, Heþ and Li bombardment at energies between 100 and 1000 eV at 45 incidence. In this work VFTRIM-3D is used to provide a qualitative physical picture of mechanisms responsible for the temperature dependence of...
